2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X at Detroit Auto Show

InsideLineVideo asked:

This is the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. Though Mitsu has lightly disguised it as the Prototype X concept car for the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, this turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sedan is the Evo X. No doubt about it. We’re so sure about it that we’ll just refer to the Prototype X as the next Evo X for the rest of this report.

Ann Knapp asked:

Detroit is a sports town. It’s a city with passionate fans and remarkable teams. When it comes to collegiate sports, Southeastern Michigan delivers a range of excitement, from Michigan State to the University of Michigan to Wayne State. With so many universities featuring some of the top collegiate sports teams, there’s no time to like now to take advantage of some college spirit.

Michigan’s oldest university, the University of Michigan was founded about 20 years before the territory of Michigan became a state. Originally located in Detroit, U of M was moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The U of M Wolverines sports teams participate in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision and in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except men’s hockey. The university’s football program ranks first in NCAA history in both wins and winning percentage. Playing at Michigan Stadium, the Blue and Yellow draw crowds that exceed 100,000. Its fiercest rivalries include Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State.

The men’s ice hockey team, which plays at Yost Ice Arena, has won nine national championships, while the men’s basketball team, playing at Crisler Arena, has appeared in four Final Fours and won one national championship.

A member of the Big 10 Conference, Michigan State University in East Lansing is well known - with its green and white colors and Sparty, the mascot. Located three miles east of Michigan’s state capitol, the 5,200-acre campus was originally founded in 1855, and has a long tradition of research and today is one of the top 100 universities in the world. Football has a long tradition at MSU and this Division 1 team won the Rose Bowl in 1954, 1956, and 1988 and boasts six national championships. Competing in Spartan Stadium, MSU’s traditional archrival is the University of Michigan, against whom they compete for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. MSU is also one of the three Big Ten teams to have an annual non-conference football game against Notre Dame. Its men’s basketball and ice hockey teams have also won national titles.

Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, is well known as being one of the largest producers of professional educators in the country. Eastern Michigan University’s sports teams participate in the Mid-American Conference, which comprises 12 universities in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, New York, and Ohio. Also sporting the colors of green and white, the EMU Eagles offer 21 NCAA Division 1 Varsity sports. EMU’s men’s basketball has appeared in four NCAA Division 1 tournaments, and have a 3-4 record, tired for third best among Michigan colleges. The Eagles have the most MAC championships in men’s swimming and diving.

Located in Detroit’s Midtown Cultural Center, Wayne State University puts its emphasis on research, with 11 schools and colleges offering more than 350 major subject areas. Founded in 1868, the university’s 203-acre main campus links 100 education and research buildings in the heart of Detroit. The university is also well known for its hosting of the Detroit Festival of the Arts. Western State University’s green and gold Warriors participate in NCAA Division II in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for all sports except ice hockey.

The University of Detroit, founded in 1877, and Mercy College of Detroit, founded in 1941, consolidated in 1990 to form the University of Detroit Mercy, Michigan’s largest and most comprehensive Catholic university. Sponsored by the Society of Jesus and the Religious Sisters of Mercy, the school offers nearly 100 academic degrees and programs of study through seven colleges and schools. Located on three campuses in Detroit, the UDM has consistently ranked among the top tier of Midwestern master’s universities in U.S. News and World Report’s “American Best Colleges.”

The Detroit Titans are the NCAA Division 1 team of the university. Competing in the Horizon League, UDM is consistently a contender for the Horizon League title in men’s basketball. ESPN’s well-known college basketball commentator, **** Vitale, was the Detroit men’s basketball head coach for four seasons before serving as the school’s Athletic Director. He also coached the Detroit Pistons.

The red, white and blue Titans will be the host institution for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional and 2009 Men’s Basketball Final Four, which are both played at Ford Field.

Detroit School District Makes Connection to Minorities

Detroit
Stacy Andell asked:

The Detroit School District is making an effort to connect to the minority students and minority businesses in the community.

Detroit School District Makes an Effort to Attract Minority Businesses

The Detroit School District’s Department of Contracting and Procurement has created a special community outreach program which gives immediate notification to certified minority businesses when bids are posted. These bids are used to determine which businesses will provide construction or services for the Detroit School District. This program, known as the Detroit Public Schools Small Contractor Development Initiative Program, provides businesses notification when the Detroit School District’s Department of Contracting and Procurement bids are solicited. The Detroit School District has created DemandStar.com, bidding notification system. It informs businesses about, among other things, invitations to bid, Request for Proposal, Request for Qualification and Request for Information.

This could become a huge boon for minority businesses in the area because large some of money are spent each year by the Detroit School District’s Department of Contracting and Procurement. The District is reaching out to minority businesses in several other ways as well. It advertises regularly in the newspapers that target the minority communities including the Michigan Chronicle, El Central and the Arab-American News. The Detroit School District has fostered connections with various chambers of commerce or business groups that have large minority memberships, such as the Arab-American Chamber of Commerce, the Detroit Black Chamber and the Booker T. Washington Business Association. The Detroit School District’s Department of Contracting and Procurement also has plans to help minority own businesses make connections to major contractors and encourage them to use the minority businesses as sub-contractors.

The Detroit School District Encourages Minority Students

In 1980 the Detroit News and the Detroit School District created the Rosa Parks Scholarship Awards. These awards are given every year and all Detroit School District high school seniors are eligible but an emphasis is placed on minority students who want to pursue journalism in college. The awards are administered by the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation. The winners are selected based on the community service, financial need and academic achievement of the students. While the Detroit News awards two additional scholarships to students who are aspiring journalists. The scholarship awards are worth two thousand dollars each. In 2006 Rosa Parks Scholarship Awards yielded a wide variety of students from different high schools across the Detroit School District. Some of the winners this year of the Rosa Parks Scholarship Awards were: Ronald Berry, Chadsey High School, Rebrika Blalock, Detroit Technology High School, Adrienne Carter, Northwestern High School, Ashley Carter, Northwestern High School, Danielle Clayton, Denby High School, Latisha Gladney-Taylor, Davis Aerospace Technical High School, Veronica Grandison, Communication and Media Arts High School, Anthony Head, Jr., Mumford High School, Dana Hill, Mumford High School, Delissa Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School, Angelina Jordan, Renaissance High School, Daryel Peake, Mumford High School, Samuel Williams, Jr., Davis Aerospace Technical High School, Noelle Williams, Renaissance High School, Darryl Woods, Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School. One of the Detroit News Rosa Parks Scholarship Award winners was Redell Willis, Chadsey High School. Miss Willis plans to head to Wayne State University in the fall, where she will major in journalism.

Detroit: The City Cars Built

Thursday, February 21st, 2008
Detroit
Ann Knapp asked:

As the automotive capital of the world and home to General Motors, the Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler, Detroit is a city built by cars. From the stunning mansions built by auto barons to sprawling automotive facilities, the automobile has left its mark the city and its people. Detroiters love their cars. Events such as the North American International Auto Show, the Grand Prix, and the Woodward Dream Cruise attract record crowds. Still more head to the racing excitement of Michigan International Speedway for Indy car action.

Detroit’s booming new industry created new jobs which drew people from throughout Europe and African Americans from the South for work. Between 1900 and 1930, the city’s population grew from 265,000 to more than 1.5 million. Led by the auto barons, Detroit’s cultural scene also blossomed. The downtown flourished with new buildings, museums and theaters built by the world’s top architects. One of the most enjoyable ways to experience Detroit’s automotive heritage is by exploring the wealth it created. And in Detroit, there’s no shortage of wealth to explore.

A visit to the Model T Automotive Heritage Complex reveals where it all began. The birthplace of the automobile assembly line, the Heritage Complex is the only example of an early Detroit auto factory open to visitors. Guests also learn about the lives of the typical autoworkers in 1908, including their 10-hour workdays and 6-day workweeks.

Next, experience the luxury of the auto elite with a tour of Fair Lane, Henry and Clara Ford’s beautiful country home estate. Named one of “America’s 10 grandest mansions” by Budget Travel Magazine, this 31,000-square-foot, six-level, 56-room home is where the Fords entertained some of the world’s most influential people.

Afterward, visit the Edsel and Eleanor Mansion in scenic Grosse Pointe Shores. At the home of Henry Ford’s only child, Edsel, visitors see original antique furnishings, an impressive collection of fine and decorative art, and much more in the breathtaking 60-room Cotswold mansion. Visitors may also stroll the 87 acres of lakefront gardens and grounds.

The Ford family was not the only auto player in town. Lawrence Fisher was one of the founders of Fisher Body Company and President of Cadillac Motors. The Fisher Mansion estate was considered one of the most lavish residences of its time with its gold and silver leafing accenting the ceilings and moldings. The black walnut and rosewood parquet floors are an impressive sight as well.

Spectacular Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester was the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, and her second husband, lumber baron Alfred G. Wilson. Completed in 1929, Meadow Brook Hall is considered an American castle and is among the finest homes in the country. The 88,000-square-foot Tudor revival-style mansion is filled with authentic furnishings, priceless art and striking antiques. The estate’s 16 gardens and 42 urns surrounding the hall are a testament to the talented design work of English landscape artist Arthur Davidson.

Detroit’s endless auto heritage stories can also be found in the city’s area museums. The Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown recreates the cobblestone streets of Old Detroit, along with its neighborhoods which were shaped by the auto industry. The museum’s Transportation History Collection focuses solely on the products of Detroit-based companies, as well as the tastes and forces that shaped the American transportation market. Currently, the museum is building their collection of the 100 most significant Detroit cars, some of which are on view.

Across the street is the Detroit Institute of Arts, which was once saved from closing by Edsel and Eleanor Ford, who also helped establish its remarkable collection. Edsel Ford, president of the Detroit Arts Commission, commissioned the famous Diego Rivera “Detroit Industry” mural contained within the museum. The Firestone and Dodge families were also major patrons of the museum. He was also an early collector of African art and his contributions were a part of the core of the original DIA African art collection.

The Automotive Hall of Fame preserves the history of mobility by celebrating the creativity, toil and genius of its makers. Visitors follow the “Driving Spirit” as he leads them through time to observe the many people who have left their mark in the auto industry.

The Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills sits beneath the shadow of the Daimler Chrysler World Headquarters. The museum houses more than 65 vehicles showcasing the company’s American heritage interspersed with displays and historical exhibits.

Could the Detroit Pistons be the Best in NBA History?

Thursday, February 21st, 2008
Detroit
Leslie Sinclair asked:

The Detroit Pistons have everything on their side right now. Time, wins, great players and some say they may be one of the best NBA team to ever grace the professional courts of the NBA. What do you think?

Look at Detroit’s last season record of 54 wins to 28 losses making them first in the Central Division. Also, take into account the fact that two years ago, they took the NBA title by maintaining outstanding play throughout the season and with exceptional coaching. Will it be the same for the 2005 - 2006 season? What has changed and what has remained the same?

First of all, Detroit’s former Coach Larry Brown has moved to New York. Brown is often credited with developing the fabulous defense that gave the Pistons that winning edge. Brown is also credited with leaving players and fans angry in the wake of his decision to move to New York.

Now, Coach Flip Saunders, in his eleventh season of coaching with 411 wins and 328 losses under his belt, will try to heat up the courts as Detroit’s new head coach. Fans can expect to see a combination of unmatched defense as well as a diligent offense providing the scores needed to excel this season. Saunders transferred from the Minnesota Timberwolves after ten very successful seasons of coaching. Will he be able to fully prepare and implement the proper aggressive offense that has been missing in order to secure a berth in the Finals in his first year with Detroit? It is anticipated that he will, because of he did lead Minnesota into the playoffs for eight of the ten years that he was coaching at Minnesota. Offense has always been considered Coach Saunders strongest point. This should give Detroit the edge it needs to stay on top.

As for Detroit’s team members, G. Maurice Evans was added this year. After playing with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2001, Evans played in Europe until returning to play with Sacramento and then moving on to Detroit. He is known for his superior shooting from the outside, this should give Detroit the edge it needed in the past. If he is able to mesh with the remaining players this should give the Pistons another dimension that it has been lacking in the past. Richard Hamilton, Chauncey Billups, Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Carlos Arroyo, Carlos Delfino, Darko Milicic, Antonio McDyess, Lindsey Hunter and Tayshaun Prince remain from last year’s line up. There were no key players lost this season.

Of course, Detroit is up against some stiff competition. It is never an easy job to be the best of the best in the NBA, but it looks like Detroit has accomplished this goal. Fans consider Saunders a good coach, but many of them wonder if he will be able to bring another championship home to the Motor City. If Saunders is able to get the players to play to their potential and adapt to his coaching philosophy, Detroit will be a team to be reckoned with this season. If the current players are able to use the teachings of Brown and the new techniques of Saunders this might be one of the best Detroit teams ever.

Detroit is very motivated and highly energized to finish out this season on top. They want to show Brown and the rest of the league that they can win without him and that they are here to stay. If they are able to play with the same intensity they have over the last couple of years winning shouldn’t be a problem.

It does help that the starting five Pistons will be returning. Beginning with Chauncey Billups, who would have earned a second straight MVP in the Finals had his team made it through the series, he’ll be joined by Richard Hamilton, an established veteran. Center Ben Wallace at 6 foot 9 inches will make the defense glow again. Antonio McDyess will play a prime backup role again. He is known for his play during the playoffs. He will get help from veteran newcomer Dale Davis. Roster moves were minimal this season but those that were made should be key to the overall success for the team this season.

The only things that could possibly hold this team back would be key player injuries or team members failing to adjust to Saunders style of play. You can rest assured that the team wants to take the title this year badly, so it is rather doubtful that this team will not give it 100%. Yet, injuries are unpredictable and this could be the only way that this team is stopped. Barring injuries this team might walk away with the NBA title in the 2005-06 season.

Detroit is the team to watch this year. You should see some exciting play, different styles and a newly developed offense to complement the already strong defense. This team has all the components of a winner including: good coaching, great defense, strong offense, and great teamwork. The Pistons are easily one of the best team on the court today, and it is very possible they are one of the best teams the NBA has ever seen!
